Important Vaccinations Before Pregnancy π€°π
Planning a pregnancy? Vaccination before conception can help protect you and your baby from certain infections and pregnancy-related complications.
π Important Vaccines to Discuss With Your Doctor
1. MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella)
Protects against rubella, which can cause serious birth defects if infection occurs during pregnancy. The MMR vaccine is a live vaccine and should be given before pregnancy. Wait at least 1 month after vaccination before trying to conceive.
2. Varicella (Chickenpox)
Helps protect against chickenpox and its possible complications. If you are not immune, vaccination is recommended before pregnancy. Wait at least 1 month after the final dose before trying to conceive.
3. Hepatitis B
Protects against hepatitis B infection, which can also pass from mother to baby. Vaccination is recommended if you are unvaccinated or need protection.
4. Influenza (Flu)
Helps protect against seasonal influenza, which can cause serious illness during pregnancy. The inactivated flu vaccine can be given during pregnancy when recommended.
5. Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis)
Protects against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough. It is recommended during every pregnancy, generally between 27 and 36 weeks, to help protect the newborn.
6. Hepatitis A
May be recommended before or during pregnancy for women with specific risk factors, depending on their medical history.
πΈ Why Consider Vaccination Before Pregnancy?
Helps reduce the risk of certain vaccine-preventable infections.
Provides protection before pregnancy when some vaccines cannot be given.
Supports a healthier pregnancy and helps protect your baby.
Important: Not every woman needs every vaccine. Your doctor can review your vaccination records, immunity, medical history and pregnancy plans to create an appropriate vaccination schedule. Live vaccines such as MMR and varicella should not be administered during pregnancy.
